Types of Toothpaste - Dental Team FL

If you had down your dental aisle in your local grocery or drug store, you will be bombarded with tons of different types of toothpaste. Different brands, different sizes and of course, different purposes. With so many to choose from, where to begin? For starters, let’s start with five main types of toothpaste.

Teeth Whitening

Who doesn’t want white shiny teeth? Over time, stains form on the teeth caused by smoke, soda, coffee, tea, wine and certain foods. A whitening toothpaste uses abrasives to help to reduce these stains, allowing for the teeth to look whiter. However, over time these abrasives can be too much and break down the teeth, so it’s best to use these whitening toothpaste sporadically.

Sensitive Teeth

For those people with teeth that are sensitive to hot or cold substances who benefit from toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. This type of toothpaste contains potassium nitrate, a substance that reduces any painful sensitivity in your teeth.

Children’s Teeth

Obviously, this type of toothpaste is designed for children as it is formulated with less fluoride. It is made with less fluoride just in case children ingest more than they should. This type of toothpaste also contains fewer abrasives since their teeth are more sensitive. Plus, they are usually fun-flavored.

Tartar Control

Containing sodium pyrophosphate, tartar control toothpaste prevents the formation of hard plaque, aka tartar on your pearly whites. This type of toothpaste also prevents tartar from forming on your gum line.

Antimicrobial

This toothpaste is formulated with stannous fluoride, an antibacterial agent. This fluoride helps to protect against cavities but is also good for those with sensitive teeth.

While there is certainly no right or wrong toothpaste to buy, it’s always right to ask your dentist which one they think is best for you. They will know better than anyone what your mouth could use more of, or even less of. They also may recommend a brand you never thought to consider.

The dentist knows best!
